What Are Tyvek® Wristbands and How Do They Work?

What Is a Tyvek® Wristband?

A Tyvek® wristband is a lightweight security wristband manufactured using DuPont™ Tyvek®, a strong synthetic material made from high-density polyethylene fibres. Tyvek® looks and feels similar to paper, which is why Tyvek® wristbands are sometimes described as paper wristbands. However, they aren't made from conventional paper. How Do Tyvek® Wristbands Work?

Tyvek® wristbands are designed to be quick and straightforward for event staff to apply. The wristband is wrapped around the guest's wrist before the end is secured using its self-adhesive closure. Once correctly applied, the security adhesive creates a tamper-evident seal. If someone attempts to peel the wristband open, the closure is designed to show evidence of interference. This makes it much more difficult for a guest to simply remove their wristband and pass it to somebody else. For venues processing hundreds or thousands of visitors, this provides a simple method of identifying people who have already been admitted.

Are Tyvek® Wristbands Waterproof?

Tyvek® wristbands are water-resistant and can cope with normal exposure to water during an event. Unlike ordinary paper, Tyvek® doesn't simply disintegrate when it gets wet. Guests can wash their hands, be caught in the rain or take part in many normal event activities without destroying the wristband. This is particularly useful for outdoor events, festivals, attractions and leisure venues where exposure to water or unpredictable British weather is likely. However, Tyvek® wristbands are primarily designed for short-term event use rather than extended wear over several days. For longer events, a fabric wristband may be a more appropriate choice.

Are Tyvek® Wristbands Tear-Resistant?

Yes. One of the key characteristics of Tyvek® is its strength. Despite being thin and lightweight, the material is difficult to tear accidentally during normal use. This combination of strength, comfort and low weight is one of the main reasons Tyvek® has become such a widely used material for event wristbands.
 

Are Tyvek® Wristbands Secure?

Tyvek® wristbands are particularly effective as a simple form of visual event security and access control. The tamper-evident adhesive closure helps discourage wristband sharing, while colours and custom printing allow security teams to identify different groups quickly.

What Can Be Printed on Tyvek® Wristbands?

Custom Tyvek® wristbands provide plenty of opportunities to incorporate event branding and security information. Depending on the design, they can include event names, company logos, dates, ticket categories, sponsor information, sequential numbers, QR codes and access instructions. If your design contains a QR code or particularly small text, we generally recommend considering the wider 25mm option to provide more usable print area.

Can You Print White on Coloured Tyvek®?

Standard pre-coloured Tyvek® has some printing limitations. In particular, white ink cannot be printed directly onto standard coloured Tyvek® wristbands. If your design requires a white background, specific brand colours or artwork extending across the wristband, an edge-to-edge printed wristband may be more appropriate. With edge-to-edge printing, we can start with a suitable base material and print the required design and background colour, providing considerably greater control over the finished appearance. This can be especially useful for branded events where colour consistency and overall presentation are important.

What Sizes Do Tyvek® Wristbands Come In?

Two of the most common widths are 19mm and 25mm.
 

19mm Tyvek® Wristbands

These are an excellent general-purpose event wristband and provide enough space for most simple text, logos and identification requirements. They're particularly useful when keeping costs low is important or when you simply need an easily identifiable admission wristband.

25mm Tyvek® Wristbands

The wider surface provides additional space for logos, text, QR codes and more detailed artwork. For designs containing several elements, the additional 6mm can make a significant difference to readability.

How Long Do Tyvek® Wristbands Last?

Tyvek® wristbands are primarily intended for short-term use, particularly single-day events. For a festival lasting an afternoon and evening, a nightclub admission system or a day's access to an attraction, they're an excellent solution. For events lasting several days, we'd normally suggest considering fabric or another longer-lasting wristband material. Choosing the right wristband isn't simply about which material is strongest. It's about matching the wristband to how it will actually be used.
 

Why Are Tyvek® Wristbands So Popular for Events?

One of the biggest advantages of Tyvek® wristbands is their simplicity. They're quick for staff to apply, comfortable for visitors to wear and easy for security teams to recognise. A custom design could be as simple as an event name printed in black or incorporate more detailed branding, numbering and QR codes. Are Tyvek® Wristbands Recyclable?

Tyvek® itself is a HDPE plastic material rather than paper, so it shouldn't be placed in normal paper recycling simply because it looks like paper. Whether used wristbands can be recycled will depend on the recycling facilities and waste streams available to your event. For organisations where curbside recyclability is a priority, we also offer dedicated paper-based alternatives such as RecycleBand, alongside other event wristband options. It's important to choose a product based on the environmental outcome you're trying to achieve rather than assuming that every paper-looking wristband has the same recycling credentials.
